Welcome at the website of the Laboratory of Forest Management and Spatial Information Techniques (FORSIT). Our research group is a member of the department of Forest and Water Management, situated at the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering at the Ghent University, Belgium. The research group focuses on remote sensing image classification, GIS and forest management planning.
We develop new image processing algorithms based on subpixel mapping, artificial neural networks and object-oriented classification for the purpose of mapping, inventory and monitoring of temperate and tropical forests (e.g. regional forest inventory design), wetlands and rangelands. Our GIS-related research concerns mapping of the spatial cover pattern based on landscape metrics and optimization of multiple objective forest management. Research on forest management planning is carried out to assess the sustainability of current forest management practices in rural settings by growth and harvest modelling and the development of adapted criteria and indicators for sustainability.
The laboratory is headed by Prof. Robert De Wulf and consists of about 10 staff members, including scientific, technical and administrative employees.
