Faculty aims for more gender equality

(21-11-2016) Our faculty takes action to make a full-time academic career more appealing in combination with a good work-family balance.

Prof. Marc Van Meirvenne, dean of the faculty of Bioscience Engineering, declares himself in favour of more gender equality in our faculty.

"At our university, the proportion of women who combine an academic position with parenthood decreases as they go higher up the academic ladder, while the proportion of men in this situation increases", says prof. Van Meirvenne.

Actions

The faculty board fully supports the notion that the appeal of a full-time academic career must be improved for professors with families. Therefore, the faculty wants to take measures that enable the combination with a balanced family life without compromising the quality of education, research and service:

  1. Adjusted meeting times, tallied with school times
  2. Flexible working hours
  3. A more positive attitude towards teleworking
  4. Alternatives for international working experiences

The faculty board already decided to move the monthly board meeting from Wednesday afternoon to Thursday afternoon.

The dean invites all staff members to brainstorm about what a family friendly working environment means for them. Based on these results, the faculty board will present a plan of action, in cooperation with the Diversity and Gender Policy Unit of Ghent University, and the faculty unit of Diversity and Gender.

About the HeForShe Campaign

HeForShe is a solidarity campaign for the advancement of women initiated by UN Women. Its goal is to engage men and boys as agents of change by encouraging them to take action against negative inequalities faced by women and girls.

Grounded in the idea that gender equality is an issue that affects all people—socially, economically and politically—it seeks to actively involve men and boys in a movement that was originally conceived as "a struggle for women by women". More than 1.302.655.234 men have already stood up for women rights, gender equality and against discrimination of women.

Ghent University started its own HeForShe campaign. The 11 deans of all faculties (all men) have recorded a video message. Watch their videos here.
