Extracting high value components from waste

The agrofood industry produces lots of waste and by-products that still contain high amounts of bioactive components.

We treat different waste streams with micro-organisms and/or enzymes to obtain extracts enriched in bioactive components (e.g. phenolic compounds).

These extracts are further tested for several bioactivities such as antimicrobial or antioxidative activity. Also their use in food products is investigated.

Valorisation of waste and by-products from the agrofood industry, using fermentation processes and/or enzyme treatments, contributes to the sustainable production of high value components. An example of high value components are natural coloring agents.
