Commission Scientific Research (CWO)

Mission

The Scientific Research Committee is committed to creating an optimal framework for researchers by helping shape faculty policy in this area, through the exchange of information and direct financial support. The focus lies on encouraging mobility and providing opportunities for young researchers.

Actions

  1. Funding mobility of young researchers
We offer specific funding to support young researchers who do not qualify for other funding channels. To this end, we maintain and update the rules and guidelines regulating the mobility and sabbaticals of our researchers. Each application for funding is carefully assessed according to the criteria established in our mobility and sabbatical regulations. Once applications are approved, we ensure that funding is transferred to researchers efficiently and on time. We aim to make the process as smooth and transparent as possible. We ensure continuous communication about this initiative via e-mail and our web pages. In doing so, we provide detailed information on the application process, criteria, deadlines and other important issues relevant to potential applicants.
  2. Funding publication costs in top journals
We provide financial assistance to researchers to cover the costs associated with publishing in reputable scientific journals. In this, we evaluate each application based on the impact of the journal and are responsible for the correct and efficient handling of funding, ensuring that funds are awarded in a timely manner and according to the set criteria.
  3. Encouragement and funding of sabbaticals
Every year, we send out a call to our ZAP members to encourage them to undertake a sabbatical. In our call, we specify the possible amounts that can be obtained for a sabbatical. We have clear rules and guidelines that define the criteria and process for applying for and receiving funding for sabbaticals. This ensures transparency and fairness in the allocation process. Once applications are approved, we ensure that funding is transferred to researchers in an efficient and timely manner. We aim to make the process as smooth and transparent as possible.
  4. Allocate starting grants to young academics
We provide start-up credits to young academics to help them set up their research projects. This start-up credit aims to provide them with the necessary resources to kick-start their research, which can range from purchasing equipment to covering operational costs. Applicants for a starting grant are invited to motivate their application. Once applications are approved, we ensure that funding is transferred to researchers in an efficient and timely manner. We aim to make the process as smooth and transparent as possible.
  5. Coordination Francqui calls and selection of honorary doctor
We play an active role in the coordination of the Francqui Calls (a prestigious programme aimed at recognising and supporting exceptional academic talents) and the selection procedure for honorary doctorates. For this purpose, we distribute the calls and inform about the opportunities and deadlines of these programmes. We assess potential candidates based on their academic achievements and contributions to their field. After careful evaluation, we nominate the selected candidates to the Faculty Council.
  6. Dissemination and feedback of information obtained from the Research Council
We ensure prompt and accurate transmission of important information from the Research Council through our report. We facilitate feedback of responses and questions from our faculty members to the Research Council through our committee representatives.
  7. Organising brainstorming sessions on current faculty topics
We identify current and relevant topics important to our faculty and organise brainstorming sessions where faculty members can discuss these topics. Ideas and suggestions raised during the brainstorming sessions are documented.
After each brainstorming session, we communicate the results and main ideas to the rest of the faculty.
  8. Inform and respond to the changing landscape in research policy and funding
We actively keep track of the latest developments in research policy and funding opportunities. This includes internal changes within Ghent University as well as external changes at national and international level.
We ensure that relevant information on policy and funding changes is communicated to our researchers in an accessible and timely manner via our report or our newsletter.
  9. Monitoring Scientific Integrity
The faculty point of contact reports annually at faculty meetings. These reports discuss the status of scientific integrity within the faculty.
  10. Promoting opportunities for young researchers
We actively share opportunities such as prizes, free workshops and conferences.
  11. Call for basic equipment
We coordinate according to available resources a call for funding to purchase basic research equipment. We handle all communication concerning the call, including announcing deadlines, clarifying criteria and answering questions from interested researchers. Once applications are submitted, we manage the evaluation process. This process includes careful evaluation of applications to ensure that funding is awarded to projects that have the greatest impact and added value for faculty. Once funding is approved, we arrange disbursement.
