Research Group Soil Contamination

Welcome to the website of the research group of Soil Contamination (SOCON). SOCON is one of the five research groups of the Department of Soil Management, UGent.

Our mission is to increase knowlegde on processes that govern fate and transport of chemicals in soils, through education and research. Knowledge on mutual interactions between water/fluid flow, transport and reactions of chemicals in soils is necessary to design soil management and soil remediation measures. To this purpose, the research group uses a combination of sensors, feasibility tests, pilot tests and reactive transport models.  The research group closely collaborates with a.o. the Flemish Institute for Technological Research (VITO).

Major lines of research

  • Measurement and online monitoring of water flow, chemical transport and gas transport in soils
  • Development and application of sensors for soil and groundwater remediation
  • Modelling of transport and reactions of chemicals in soils
  • Development of reactive transport models for typical soil contamination cases (CAH's, oil spills, ...)
