Bench fee

The bench fee guideline is applicable to all PhD students that enrol at Ghent University and for whom a bench fee is not part of their mandate or the project they are funded through.

When your application was successful, you will receive a letter of admission. This letter enables you to:

  • apply for a visa
  • apply for a scholarship
  • apply for housing at Ghent University residences
  • enrol as a Ghent University student

The letter of admission will state the following information:

  • Your details and file number (reference)
  • the programme that you were admitted to, and the faculty where the programme is organised
  • the date when the decision was made by the Faculty Board
  • the academic year in which you are admitted (not for PhD students)
  • where you have to go and what you have to bring to enrol

An application for a doctorate is not linked to an academic year. This means that PhD students are not required to enrol prior to the start of an academic year. When a letter of admission is issued for a doctorate, there will not be stated in which academic year you must enrol.

Behind the scenes

  • The online application is started up by your future PhD supervisor.
  • You will receive an e-mail to complete your section of the online application and to review and approve your supervisor's entries.
  • When the application has been approved both by you and your supervisor, your application will be assessed by the PhD admissions team and the faculty.
  • The faculty will go into more detail and determine whether your degree is sufficiently related and will decide on whether or not to grant admission.
  • A letter of admission will be issued when the faculty has formally approved your application. The letter of admission is sent by e-mail and post.
