Numerical facilities

In addition to advanced state-of-the-art experimental equipment the (DMSE) department also extends its research to modelling activities employing a wide variety of computing tools including state-of-the-art hardware facilities and advanced software packages for control of materials processing, observation and testing.

Finite element codes

Commercial finite element codes

  • ABAQUS
  • LS-Dyna

Both modules are available for static and dynamic linear and nonlinear analysis.
User-defined material models can be implemented in both finite element codes to simulate the experimentally observed material behaviour under different loading conditions (fatigue, impact, static nonlinear,...).
Damage laws account for the initiation and growth of damage in the material and the corresponding degradation of the elastic properties.

Commercial finite element pre-processing tool

  • Hypermesh

Mathematical software

  • Matlab
  • Mathcad
  • Maple
  • ThermoCalc

Measurement and data acquisition software

  • LabVIEW

Used for automating testing procedures
