Admission requirements

Degree requirements

Belgian students can enroll in this master program coming from several bachelor programs.

For foreign students, the applicant needs to be in possession of a bachelor degree in Electrical engineering, in (Applied) Physics, Materials Science or an equivalent of this to be directly admitted to the program. Students in their last year of such a programme will however also be considered.

Students in possession of another bachelor degree might need to follow a preparatory program. The educational board will make the final decision whether to accept the application or not.

Language requirements

For foreign students, the following shall be accepted as proof:

  • a TOEFL-TEST, taken as recently as within the last two years, showing a score of at least 570 (paper-based) or 87 (internet-based)
  • an original "test report from" (TRF) from IELTS, issued as recently as within the last two years, showing a score of at least 6.5, with a minimum of 6.0 per each part

Application

Students who wish to apply for the Master of Science in Photonics Engineering-programme, must follow a specific MSPE-application procedure.

The application for academic year 2014-2015 opens September 15 (deadline: March 1st 2014). No applications will be accepted past this date.

The selected students will receive an invitation letter for enrollment (academic acceptance) by the beginning of June. All details about enrollment and accommodation will be mentioned in this letter.

Students from Ghent University or Vrije Universiteit Brussel can follow the regular application procedure at UGent or VUB.

Grants

  • MSPE Excellence Grant

The MSPE Program Board awards grants on a competitive basis among all accepted MSPE students. All students who apply for this program are therefore eligible to be awarded a MSPE Excellence Grant (no separate application procedure is required).

Both the Photonics Research Group (Ghent University) and the B-Phot research team (Vrije Universiteit Brussel) finance one or more MSPE Excellence Grants. The candidates who receive the Excellence Grant must commit themselves to do a MSc. thesis at the group who finances the grant.

  • EMA2-partnership Grants

Both Ghent University and the Vrije Universiteit Brussel are involved in Erasmus Mundus Action Action 2 (partnerships) projects. These partnerships aim at specific regions in Europe (e.g. Balkan) or worldwide (e.g. Latin America, China, etc). Students can apply for a scholarship through one of these partnership projects and if awarded, they can use this grant to study the MPSE MSc.
