Simulation of Weft Insertion on Air-jet and Rapier Looms: Ph.D. work.
During the last decennia, the production speed of looms has increased enormously in parallel with the evolution of the weaving technology. The high speeds together with the demand for high quality fabrics have resulted in a need for more detailed knowledge of the weaving process. In this Ph.D. one particular part of the weaving process, the weft insertion, will be thoroughly examined. A computer model was developed to simulate the weft insertion. This model uses classical models such as the laws of Newton, however, modern calculation methods, such as the finite volume model, are also considered. The intention is to validate the theoretical model by experiments. Possible differences between the theoretical model and the experimental results will be meticulously examined to be able to refine the model as accurately as possible. A better understanding of weft insertion can lead to a better control and optimisation of the weaving process. The aim is to further increase the production speed and the fabric quality without negative side effects. In conclusion, a computer model for weft insertion is developed, which will be validated and improved in order to create a powerful tool for designing and evaluating new techniques for a better weft insertion.
