Lecture 'Keep it complex! Towards a sustainable 21st century university'
This year Ghent University celebrates its 200th birthday and that seems a great opportunity for a reflection on the role of universities towards a socially just and ecologically sustainable society. The Studium Generale 2017 consists of a series of four evening lectures. The first session is in English and focuses on the importance and wickedness of sustainability challenges.
• Introduction by dr. Erik Paredis, senior researcher at the Centre for Sustainable Development (Ghent University)
• “The Sustainable 21st Century University: More than just wishful thinking?” by prof. em. René Schwarzenbach, president of the platform ‘Science and Policy’ of the Swiss Academy of Natural Sciences (ScNat) and president of the board of the ‘International Sustainable Campus Network’ (ISCN)
• "Worldviews in education" by prof. dr. Leif Östman, professor at the department of Education (Uppsala University), scientific director of the research group SMED (Studies of Meaning-making in Educational Discourses), scientific leader of the Swedish national Graduate school in Education and Sustainable Development (GRESD – 2009-2016) and member of the Swedish national commission for UNESCO.
