(25-08-2017) Two duos have made a call for the forthcoming rector and vice-rector elections at Ghent University: Karin Raeymaeckers and Patrick De Baets and Rik Van de Walle and Mieke Van Herreweghe.

Elections at Ghent University

At Ghent University the third cycle in the elections for a new rector and vice- rector is held in September 2017. The Board of Governors has adapted the election regulations.

The election cycle can count a maximum number of three voting rounds. If two duos apply the weighted two-thirds majority is kept in the first voting round. In the second voting round this becomes a normal weighted majority.

The first round of voting will take place on Monday, September 18, 2017 and end on Tuesday, September 19, 2017. If one duo reaches a majority of two-thirds of the votes cast, the duo will be elected by the Board of governors after appointment.

If no-one reaches a two-thirds majority, a second round of votes will be held from Thursday, September 21, 2017 at 8 am to Friday, 22 September 2017.

Candidates

Karin Raeymaeckers en Patrick De Baets

Professor Karin Raeymaeckers is candidate rector. Since 2012, Karin Raeymaeckers has been a professor at the faculty of Political and Social Sciences, department Communication Sciences. She is an expert in journalism studies and media structures. From 2014 on, she has been a member of the Ghent University board of governors, and since October 2015, she has been the head of the departemental of Communication studies.

Patrick De Baets is candidate vice-rector . He is a mechanical engineer and professor at the faculty of Engineering and Architecture. He is an academic secretary of the faculty since 2013 and ever since 2014, member of the Ghent University board of governors.

Rik Van de Walle en Mieke Van Herreweghe

Professor Rik Van de Walle is candidate rector. He has been dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture of the UGent since 2012. Since 2014 Professor Van de Walle also has the Department of Electronics and Information Systems; He is also a member of the board of directors of imec.

Professor Mieke Van Herreweghe is candidate vice-rector . Since 2012 she has been Professor of English Linguistics at the UGent. Her expertise focuses on the acquisition of English as a foreign language and the historical aspects of English, as well as the Flemish Sign Language.
