Elections of rector and vice-rector: towards a third round

(28-04-2017) In the second round of the rector and vice-rector elections, none of the duos achieved a two-thirds majority. The next round takes place from Wednesday 3 to Friday 5 May 2017.

Rik Van de Walle and Mieke Van Herreweghe achieved 59.62% of the votes, compared to 57.75% in the first round. Guido Van Huylenbroeck and Sarah De Saeger achieved 35.94% of the votes, compared to 36.20% in the first round.

The amount of blank votes decreases from 6% to 4.4%, which means that more staff and students have explicitly voted for one of the candidates. The voter turnout in the second round was remarkably high.

New election rules

The rules in the elections at Ghent University have changed thoroughly. Both staff and students are allowed to vote. Also, the candidates had to come up as a duo, and within each duo there had to be a gender balance.

Two duos presented themselves: Rik Van de Walle (rector) and Mieke Van Herreweghe (vice-rector), and Guido Van Huylenbroeck (rector) and Sarah De Saeger (vice-rector).

Next week, the second voting round will take place from Wednesday 3 May (9:00) until Friday 5 May 2017 (12:00). Again, all staff and students are invited to vote on https://verkiezingen.ugent.be
