Tips for cyber security at Ghent University

(18-05-2017) At Ghent University the cyber attack with the Wannacry virus did not cause any problem. However we would like to focus on some tips to keep your working environment safe at all times.

Cyber security is a matter of all staff members. Some crucial points must be taken into account to keep your working environment safe:

  • Keep your IT systems up-to-date (operating systems as well as applications). Systems that are not up-to-date can easily be contaminated with malware.
  • Keep your anti-virus software active and up-to-date.
  • Make sure you have a back-up of your data at all times. On the disk space provided by DICT back-ups are made automatically. Use these centrally provided services.
  • From time to time false e-mails are going around; they want to trick you in clicking on a link or file so that your system is contaminated with malware. Stay alert and do not react on this!
  • Keep your Ghent University password private and well secured.
