New faculty library for Arts & Philosophy

(2012-02-22) The Faculty of Arts and Philosophy has celebrated the conclusion of the first stage of the merger of the 48 department libraries into one big library, stimulating and supporting research and education. The Literature and Near East collections can now be consulted at Rozier 44 as open stacks library.

The Faculty of Arts and Philosophy is home to a rich and extensive library collection of around 670.000 volumes which - until recently - were spread around 48 department and seminar libraries at 222 (!) different locations.

Since 2009 the plan to create a central faculty library has been set in motion. The new library has found a home at Rozier 44 - the renovated 'Institut des Sciences' of the Plateau site opposite the Book Tower. This apt and inspiring location was officially opened by the rector on Friday 17 February 2012. The second phase of the project takes places in 2013, concluding in 2014 with the third and final phase. At that stage all department collections are available at one place - forming the largest open stacks library in Ghent.

During the first phase the collections of the Literature departments and the Near East department have been moved, making around 120.000 books available and another 68.000 volumes through the depot. Consult the full list at the online catalogue http://lib.ugent.be/.

  • 221 study and consultation desks have been created for students and researchers (including electrical sockets, 20 computers and two copier-scanners). There is WiFi throughout the library.
  • There are also lockers of the small variety to store your stuff. You are allowed to bring small water bottles but other drinks and food items are prohibited.
  • Extended opening hours: from 9 am till 8 pm on Mondays through Thursdays and from 9am till 5 pm on Fridays.
