Creative city of Ghent partners up with UGent to host Unesco Music Day
(2012-02-22) On Sunday 11 March 2012, Ghent will be home to the first Unesco Music Day. During this day, concert hall De Bijloke will host three exceptional late-baroque concerts, with ensembles from Ghent, Seville and Bologna.
The event ties in with Ghent's recently awarded title of Unesco Creative City of Music, a unique designation held by only four cities around the globe.
Three ensembles of ancient music from as many cities will be presented both separately and together on stage. The festivities start on Friday 9 March, with De Bijloke send the Ghent ensemble B'rock to Seville. Two days later, all ensembles will gather in Ghent for the Unesco Music Day.
The concept is simple: drawing on their vast and rich musical heritage, every city selects an ensemble specialised in ancient music, and lets it browse throughout their home region's renaissance and baroque heritage.
