Doctoral Schools

For Ghent University the doctoral experience is a very valuable one. The launch of five Doctoral Schools in the autumn of 2007 testifies to this.

Mission

These Doctoral Schools have a three-fold mission:

  • to increase the international and social value of the doctorate from the perspective of potential researchers as well as from a labour-market point of view,
  • to enhance the support provided to doctoral students in the course of their doctorate research,
  • to strenghten a quality culture in (doctoral) research.

The Doctoral Schools cooperate with Ghent University's 11 faculties in order to give shape to this mission.

Membership benefits

All new doctoral students enrolled at Ghent University will automatically become a member of one of the Doctoral Schools.

Research coaching is still provided by a personal supervisor, but the Doctoral Schools provide assistance to all of the parties involved in doctorate research. They offer top-level specialised courses to doctoral students both within and outside of their own discipline. They complement relevant skills training with research-related activities.

In addition, the Doctoral Schools organise guest lectures, information sessions, promotional events and interaction with industry, and as such keep a finger on the pulse of external stakeholders.
