International Foundation for Science (IFS)

IFS is a non-governmental organisation founded in 1972. Funding comes from governmental and non-governmental sources, as well as from national and international organisations.

IFS supports young scientists from developing countries who have the potential to become the future research leaders and lead scientists in their nations. IFS helps young researchers with the start of their career and helps them to receive national and international recognition.

IFS contributes towards strengthening the capacity of developing countries to conduct relevant and high-quality research on the sustainable management of biological resources. This involves the study of physical, chemical, and biological processes, as well as relevant social and economic aspects, important in the conservation, production, and renewable utilisation of natural resources.

Who can apply?

The criteria for eligibility for IFS-support stipulate that the scientist must be young, at the beginning of his or her research career, and from a developing country. His/her research must take place at a national university, a research institute or a research-oriented NGO, in the developing country. The young scientist must also be the holder of an M.Sc.-degree.

What does the funding cover?

The funding is a research ‘back-pack’ to cover all necessary expenses to found or to extend a research group.
