IWT- doctoral scholarships for EU-citizens
The IWT is a Flemish organisation stimulating and supporting innovation. IWT offers financial support to companies for executing industrial research and development projects; to research institutes for projects in strategic basic research, collective research and technology transfer; and to individual researchers for support in their doctoral and postdoctoral research projects.
The IWT doctoral Scholarships (“Strategische Onderzoeksbeurzen”) are available to young researches who intend to obtain a Ph.D. degree by research at a Flemish institution.
Who can apply?
Applicants must citizens of an E.U. member state, Liechtenstein, Iceland, Norway or Switzeland, and be 2nd-cycle graduates. They must have graduated with a “Distinction” degree (Honours Degree) at 2nd-cycle or masters’ level no more than 5 years before applying for the doctoral scholarship.
Duration
Scholarships are awarded for 2 terms of 2 years. Positive interim evaluation during the second year is a condition to extend the scholarship into a second term.
How does it work?
The applications, in Dutch or English, must be submitted on-line between 1 August and 15 September. Candidates must also give an oral defence of their proposal to a committee of experts, this presentation will have to be done in the language of the application. Upon termination, the scholarship holder may receive a doctoral bonus if the Ph.D. degree is obtained during the period of the scholarship or within a maximum period of six months following the end of the second term.
How much funding is involved?
The scholarship includes a monthly allowance plus bench fees. The allowance is tax-exempt but the scholarship holder is covered by social security.
