VLIR-ICP - PhD Scholarships for candidates from developing countries

VLIR-UOS launched its ICP-Ph.D. programme to institutionally strengthen universities or research institutions in the South through capacity building. It enables the upgrading of local academic personnel by offering a maximum of 10 scholarships every year.

Who can apply?

In order to be eligible for an ICP-Ph.D. grant, the student has to be an ICP-graduate of VLIR-UOS- funded international courses at Master’s level. The application should be submitted to VLIR-UOS within two years after graduation from the ICP. The candidate has to be a national of a country on the VLIR-UDC country list and have permanent residence in a developing country.

How does it work?

In principle, an ICP-Ph.D. scholarship is awarded twice for a two-year period. The total duration of the scholarship may never exceed four years. Before the end of the second year the Ph.D. scholar must write an application for extension. Both the Flemish and the local promotor have to write a brief evaluation report. Generally, two-thirds of the research is conducted at the local institution and one-third at the Flemish University. The scholarship holder is free to choose the periods of his/her stays in Belgium and in his/her home country, albeit in agreement with the promotors. For practical reasons, the scholar is obliged to come to Belgium at the start of the scholarship period.

What does the funding cover?

The scholar receives a monthly allowance of €1,085 or more while residing in Belgium, and of €542 or more while residing in his/her home country, depending on the family situation. The funding also covers tuition fees, travel expenses and bench fees.
