Publications & Academic Bibliography
All publications of researchers which have appeared during their tenure at Ghent University are recorded in the Academic Bibliography - from articles in national and international periodicals to essays in books and conference proceedings.
The Academic Bibliography is part of a larger entity, simply known as 'Biblio' which is managed by the University Library:
- Academic Bibliography: overview of publications of UGent researchers
- Institutional Repository: archive of full texts of UGent publications
UGent researchers can put in publication data themselves. One can find further information on the Academic Bibliography (including an extensive FAQ) through the University Library website.
Why does a UGent researcher have to complete his/her academic bibliography on a yearly basis?
The Academic Bibliography forms the basis of all information on UGent's research output. Besides its purely informative value, the bibliography has a big impact on numerous decisions and computations such as awarding of the doctoral bonus, promoting of academic staff, prolonging of research mandates, granting of credits in the doctoral programme.
The UGent Academic Bibliography is the most complete database of research output of our institution but retains her value mostly to the extent that researchers keep updating their publication data. Considering the rising importance of non-A1 publications in the Flemish and internal distribution formulas (e.g. Special Research Fund) it is crucial that proceedings, patents, books and contributions in books are also put forward.
Open Access
As stated in the report on institutional publication policy Ghent University stimulates publishing in Open Access periodicals. There are some clear advantages for the researcher involved: the author retains the right to (re-)publish, the article enjoys a greater visibility and is accessible to the public at large.
A large number of 'traditional' periodicals allow authors to make their papers public 6 or 12 months after publication through a system of self-archiving. Via the Directory of Open Access Journals one can ascertain what the Open Access status of a certain periodical is.
For UGent researchers a list has been drafted of all Open Access periodicals that are included in the Web of Science (SCIE, SSCI and AHCI).
