Erasmus Mundus Programme
The Erasmus Mundus programme is a cooperation and mobility programme in the field of higher education. Through it, the European Commission aims to enhance quality in European higher education and to promote cooperation with third countries.
The programme is intended to strengthen international links in higher education by supporting high-quality joint international Masters en PhD Courses, by enabling students and visiting scholars from around the world to engage in study at European universities, as well as by encouraging the outgoing mobility of European students and scholars towards third countries.
Actions
Each year the European Commission launches different calls for project proposals within the Erasmus Mundus programme, divided over the following Actions.
| Action 1 | Erasmus Mundus Joint Programmes Erasmus Mundus Joint Programmes are high-quality integrated courses at Master (Action 1A) and PhD level (Action 2B) offered by a consortium of at least three universities in at least three different European countries, and selected for funding by the European Commission for a period of five years. Non-European institutions can also become full consortium member. The course must be “integrated” to be selected, which means that it must foresee a study period in at least two of the three universities and that it must lead to the award of a recognised double, multiple or joint diploma. To enable them to take part in these course programmes, Erasmus Mundus scholarships are awarded to the best candidates, both from Third Countries and the EU. See the list of Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Programmes at Ghent University and the Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctorate Programmes it coordinates. |
| Action 2 | Erasmus Mundus Partnerships (the former ‘External Cooperation Window’): the selection of partnership consortia between European institutions of higher education on the one hand, and institutions of a specific third country or global region on the other. These partnerships allow for incoming mobility of third country students and academic staff, and for outgoing mobility of EU students and academic staff through a dedicated scholarship scheme. See the list of Erasmus Mundus partnerships in which Ghent University participates |
| Action 3 | Enhancing attractiveness: Erasmus Mundus also supports projects aimed at enhancing the attractiveness of and the interest in European higher education. A wide range of activities is supported: conferences, seminars, publications, marketing activities,… |
Students and scholars are invited to apply directly to the consortia, in accordance with their respective instructions.
