Laboratory of Toxicology

The Laboratory of Toxicology is situated in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences of the Ghent University. The laboratory is mainly involved in the following activities: scientific research, public services and education. The laboratory is part of the Forensic Institute of Ghent University.

The research is mainly focused on development of analytical methods to determine drugs in human fluids (blood, plasma, urine). Other research areas are determination of folates (vitamin B 9) in plant material and determination of drugs in environmental matrices. Analytical techniques used are GC-MS, LC-MS/MS, LC-Fluo, and immunological methods (for screening).

The laboratory's main public service is situated in the field of analytical chemistry. This means that the laboratory has thorough expertise in the determination of ethanol, drugs and drugs of abuse in biological matrices such as blood and urine. This expertise is routinely used to help judicial investigations. Another type of routine analysis that is part of the laboratories main activities is workplace analysis.
