Laboratory of Pharmaceutical Microbiology

The Laboratory of Pharmaceutical Microbiology belongs to the “Department of Pharmaceutical Analysis” (FW02) at the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, FFW (Faculteit Farmaceutische Wetenschappen), Harelbekestraat 72, B-9000 Gent, Belgium.

Prof. Dr. H.J. Nelis and Prof. Dr. T. Coenye direct the laboratory. Prof. Nelis is currently also the chairman of the department.

The main research activities of the laboratory are focussed on biofilm formation by various micro-organisms and on the evaluation of novel strategies to prevent biofilm formation and/or eradicate existing biofilms. A second area of interest is the use of rapid techniques (including solid phase cytometry) for the detection and accurate quantification of micro-organisms in various samples.
