Research Projects

Research Project 1: Resuscitation medicine

Innovative resuscitation equipment

Studies are undertaken to clinically evaluate new ventilation strategies during resuscitation and innovative resuscitation equipment to increase the efficacy of both ventilation and chest compression.

Guidelines development

Our group is actively involved in the process of the development of international policy and guidelines in the field of resuscitation. We participate in the evidence based process of the evaluation of resuscitation science that will lead to the new European Guidelines for Resuscitation in 2010.

Educational research

We conduct studies investigating more effective approaches for CPR
training such as computer supported and self-directed learning with interactive manikins.

Automated external defibrillators (AED’s)
Based on real interventions, all aspects of AED use (e.g. training of ambulance crew and advanced life support providers, technical aspects, safety, ...) are studied.

Quality of resuscitation

Studies are undertaken to clinically evaluate the quality of  resuscitation.

Research Project 2: Toxicology

Monitoring of alcohol- and illicit drug-related prehospital interventions and hospital admission and subsequent treatment.

Participation in a European study on drug use in motor vehicle drivers (DRUID study). Drivers with relatively severe injuries presenting to our emergency department following a motor vehicle accident will be included if there are hospitalized for at least 24 hours.

Retrospective study of electrolyte disturbances in patients admitted with acute poisoning.

Study of in vitro toxicokinetics of acetonitrile and potential antidotes.

European Survey: Risk of cyanide poisoning in smoke inhalation

Research Project 3: Policy development and resources utilisation in emergency medicine.

Study on utilization of out-of-hours medical care in the 2 primary care centres and the 4 emergency departments of Ghent.

Research Project 4:  Epidemiology and outcome of community acquired and health-care associated pneumonia: participation in a multicentric prospective study.

Research Project 5:  Trauma Care

Participation in the analysis of the PENTA (PaEdiatric Network around Trauma) database.

Research Project 6: Pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics

The influence of liver disease on the biotransformation of drugs in children

Study of the evolution of hepatic biotransformation following liver transplantation

Influence of tocolytics on central and peripheral hemodynamics

Dexmedetomidine pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics in children

Research Project 7:  Pain management

Study of the effect of e-learning on the skills and knowledge of acute pain management in medical students

Study of different analgesic strategies in patients admitted to the emergency department

Research Project 8:  Registry of all complaints against the emergency department.

Based on complaints against the emergency department (related to both in-hospital care and prehospital interventions) all aspects of the department are monitored.
