Onderzoeksprojecten

The Asklepios project is an epidemiological project that started between 2002 and 2004 in an intense collaberation with the GP’s practice Asklepios (Erpe Mere and Nieuwerkerken) and the Ghent University. The four partners at teh University are: the department of Internal Medicine (cardiology), the department of Public Health, the department of Civil Engineering and the department of Molecular Biotechnology. The primary interest of the Asklepios project is successful ageing, cardiac and vascular haemodynamics. Two thousand five hundred healthy people between the age of 35 and 55 filled in questionnaires, had an extensive examination of their blood, DNA, antropometrical, non-invasive cardiac and vascular parameters.

This group of people is followed up as a cohort. The cross-sectional connections are currently processed and published. In 2010, after 7 years, the second measuring round of the Asklepios project will start and this second round is expected to be completed in 2014. The follow-up is vital to validate conceptual insights on disease processes, by documenting the progression. The final phase of the study will be outcome analyses that will focuse on major adverse cardiac events (MACE). In this second round further collaboration will be developed with endocrinology (J.M. Kaufman), kidney disease (R. Vanholder) and lung disease (G. Brusselle, G. Joos).
