Automated image analysis service for DNA damage and radiosensitivity

The "Automated DNA damage and radiosensitivity" service exploits a "Metafer4" image analysis apparatus for the performance of automated or semi-autiomated testing of DNA damage, DNA repair capacity and chromosomal radiosensitivity.

The tests performed by our service include:

  • the micronucleus assay
  • the micronucleus centromere assay
  • the dicentric chromosome aberration assay
  • the scoring of  -H2AX


By automated image scoring it is possible to perform high throughput DNA damage, repair and radiosensitivity analysis in the frame of large-scale clinical studies (cancer prevention, etc), in routine clinical screening (radiotherapy, diagnosis), in radiation protection procedures (biological dosimetry), and in case of assignment of degrees of clinical urgency after accidental exposure of populations to ionizing radiation (triage activity).

By automated or manual image scoring, in our laboratories we also perform tests  (micronucleus assay, G2 assay) for diagnosis and phenotypical characterization of genetic diseases showing genomic instability and enhanced sensitivity to the genotoxic damage of ionizing radiation, like:

  • Ataxia-telangiectasia (AT)
  • Ataxia-telangiectasia-like disorder (ATLD)
  • Nijmegen breakage syndrome (NBS)
