Starting level:

You already have a quite extensive knowledge of Italian; you can understand spoken Italian well, even when spoken quickly.
You can participate quite easily in a conversation on topics that you are familiar with (job, hobbies,…) You can use complex sentences in these situations.

You can use the following tenses: l’indicativo presente, il futuro semplice, il condizionale semplice, l’imperativo (tutte le forme), il condizionale composto, il passato prossimo, l’imperfetto, il congiuntivo presente, la forma passiva. In addition, being able to use the following grammar items is required: i pronomi personali, possessivi, diretti, indiretti, combinati; i gradi di comparazione, i pronomi relativi, gli avverbi.

You are able to use the congiuntivo presente but not the other tenses of the congiuntivo.

You take a placement test in the first session.

Content:

  • Speaking skills: Speaking is an important part of the course. Many grammar exercises will be covered in a communicative setting. The various oral exercises (in pairs, in small groups, class-wide, discussion/debate) ensure that you actively use new vocabulary. Pronunciation, intonation and rhythm are focused on. By the end of this course, you will be able to participate in a conversation in Italian without preparation.
  • Listening skills: Mostly authentic material is used in classes (radio and television recordings). You will be able to follow more complex explanations on topics that you are familiar with.
  • Reading skills: Mainly authentic texts are read. By the end of the course, you will be able to read opinion articles on current topics.
  • Writing skills: Through practical writing exercises, you practise grammar and vocabulary as realistically as possible. This aspect is mainly covered in homework assignments. Some examples: writing a nuanced letter of complaint; continuing a story written in the past tense; defending a position… The main focus lies on the correct use of the tenses.
  • Vocabulary: Each chapter covers a specific theme, broadening vocabulary, dealing with specific grammar items, and introducing idiomatic expressions and collocations. Additional emphasis will be put on Italian for business purposes.
  • The online learning platform offers extra vocabulary and grammar exercises for practice at your own pace.
  • A number of themes are l’arte, la tecnologia, il traffico, la vita in città, l’italiano professionale…
  • Specific grammar items: The tenses of the congiuntivo (presente/imperfetto/passato e trapassato), il periodo ipotetico (sentences starting with SE), conjuncts (+indicativo/congiuntivo), recognizing the passato remoto, la concordanza dei modi/tempi, i modi indefiniti (gerundio/participio/infinito).
