The study of tumor development and progression can benefit from the simultaneous analysis of different types of variants and/or omics data, since each data type can capture a different aspect of the tumor’s deviating biology. Cancer datasets are becoming increasingly available not only in the public domain (TCGA and ICGC) but increasingly also in hospital settings. The correct integration of these heterogeneous data can pave the way towards personalized medicine, provided they can be made sense of. Key to this integration is the understanding of cancer as a clonal disease. This clonality will not only determine the way we perform data-integration but might also change the way we apply sequencing approaches for typing and treatment prediction in a clinical setting.
