Prof. Cem Gabay from the Department of Internal Medicine Specialties, University Hospitals of Geneva will present his work on IL-1 and -18 inhibitors.

The IL-1 family includes cytokines with pro-inflammatory properties, the activities of which are tightly regulated by natural inhibitors. IL-1Ra, a well-described IL-1 inhibitor is expressed as several different isoforms from the same gene by the use of different first exons and mRNA splicing. The function of icIL-1Ra1, an intracellular IL-1Ra isoform has been examined using specific knockout mice in a model of psoriasis. IL-18 binding protein (IL-18BP) is a naturally occurring IL-18 inhibitor. The role of IL-18BP was examined in a model of macrophage activation syndrome.
