(02-06-2017) Helena Vanommeslaeghe, PhD Defense, Middle Ages, abbots, Lotharingia

Congratulations to Helena Vanommeslaeghe (LW03) for successfully defending her PhD thesis on May 31st. Her work is entitled  "Qualis debeat esse abbas. De evolutie van abbatiale (zelf)representaties in Vlaanderen en Lotharingen (ca. 919-1125)”. She is now Doctor in History.

The new thesis provides an analysis of the evolution of Benedictine abbatial leadership in medieval Flanders and Lotharingia. Focusing on a fascinating period of intense monastic and ecclesiastical reform in the High Middle Ages, the author uses (self)representations in narrative sources to paint a compelling picture of what benedictine leadership (ideally) looked like and how it evolved over time.
