Antonius J. van Rooij, PhD (Tony) is a senior researcher at Ghent University (Department of Communication Sciences). He is also affiliated with the imec Research Group for Media, Information, and Communication Technology (mict). His PhD (Rotterdam, 2011) dealt with excessive use of video games and was titled “Online Video Game Addiction: Exploring a New Phenomenon”.

His current research subjects cover responsible media use, including the study of online gambling and gaming. Additionally, he also focuses on the use of video games for health. The behavioral persistence that video games elicit can have detrimental consequences, but can also be used to achieve health benefits.
