Thursday 15/12/2016 Prof. Filip De Boeck (KULeuven)

“Covering the city: how ethnography and photography work together”

Filip De Boeck will talk about his collaboration with Congolese photographer Sammy Baloji. Their joint research resulted in a book, "Suturing the City", and an exhibition. Presenting a narrative of place, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, their work is also a study of things that defy verbal narration: the city’s affective landscapes and moods. De Boeck will discuss how ethnography, photography and film may be used together to produce a different kind of ethnographic analysis of contemporary urban realities in Central Africa.

Filip De Boeck is coordinator of the Institute for Anthropological Research in Africa Research Unit of the Faculty of Social Sciences, at KULeuven. He is also Professor and actively involved in teaching, promoting, coordinating and supervising research in and on Africa. Since 1987 he has conducted extensive field research in both rural and urban communities in the Democratic Republic of Congo. His most recent book is Suturing the City. Living Together in Congo's Urban Worlds (2016), co-authored with photographer Sammy Baloji.
