Centre for Social Theory
There is nothing more practical than a good theory
(K. Lewin, 1952)
The Centre for Social Theory focuses upon theoretical and theory-driven empirical research, organized around four major themes: “big structures, large processes and huge comparisons” (Tilly 1984), the micro-macro link, the agency-structure debate, and current debates in sociological theory.
In addressing these questions, research at the Centre for Social Theory both contributes to a variety of fields within sociology, but given that many of the key theoretical debates today are no longer discipline-specific, CST also engages in theoretical discussions with other disciplines.
