Peter Van Elsuwege behaalde een doctoraat in de Rechten (Universiteit Gent 2007) en een Master in Internationale Betrekkingen (2000) en Europees Recht (2001). Hij vervoegde het Europees Instituut van de Universiteit Gent in 2001 en heeft gewerkt als academisch assistent en post-doctoraal medewerker van het Fonds voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek - Vlaanderen (FWO) aan de vakgroep Europees Gemeenschapsrecht.
Vanaf 1 februari 2010 werd hij aangesteld als voltijds docent Europees Recht.
Het onderzoeksgebied van Peter Van Elsuwege is voornamelijk gericht op het recht van de EU externe betrekkingen met een speciale aandacht voor het juridisch kader van de relaties tussen de EU en haar Oost-Europese buurlanden.
Peter Van Elsuwege is ook coördinator van een Jean Monnet module omtrent 'De juridische dimensie van de EU externe relaties', en is betrokken bij het 'Centre for the Law of EU External Relations' (CLEER), en het 'Centre for Russian International, Socio-Political and Economic Studies' (CERISE).

Peter Van Elsuwege holds a PhD in Law (University of Ghent, 2007) and a Master in European Law (2001) and International Relations (2000). He joined the European Institute of Ghent University in October 2001 and worked as an Academic Assistant and as a Postdoctoral Fellow of the Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO) at the European Law Department.
On 1 February 2010, he was appointed Tenure Track Professor in EU law.
His research activities essentially focus on the law of EU external relations. Specific attention is devoted to the legal framework of the relations between the European Union and its East European neighbours.
Peter Van Elsuwege is also the academic coordinator of a Jean Monnet Module on “The Legal Dimension of EU External Relations” and an affiliated member of the Centre for the Law of EU External Relations (CLEER) and the Centre for Russian International, Socio-Political and Economic Studies (CERISE).
