Welcome on the site of the Research Group of Criminology and Sociology of Law. The Research Group Criminology and Sociology of Law is a part of the Department of Criminal Law and Criminology of the Faculty of Law at the Ghent University. We conduct research since 1987 in the following areas:

  • sociology of penal law
  • prevention and security policy
  • criminography
  • subjective feelings of insecurity by crime
  • informal economy
  • police and inspection services
  • ethnic minorities and crime, police and criminal justice
  • victimization of persons, households and enterprises
  • media images on crime and crime control
The Research Group Criminology and Sociology of Law does externally financed research in assignment of various services: Ministry of Internal Affaires, Ministry of Science Policy, Royal Commissariat of migration policy, Centre for Equal Opportunities and Opposition to Racism, City of Ghent, City of Antwerp, King Boudewijn Foundation, European Forum for urban safety and the European Union.

Mission

The Research Group Criminology and Sociology of Law analyses and evaluates from a critical viewpoint developments in crime and crime control. Policy recommendations that support a legitimate, social just and emancipatory policy are formulated on the basis of research results.
