Grants opportunities

To whom it might be of interest, we have made a short list of organizations and other institutions offering means of finance to researchers and students worldwide. The first selection focuses on financial agreements between two or more institutions in the South, while the second selection aims at facilitating cooperations between institutions in the North and those in the South, or vice versa.

South – South

  • TWAS offers fellowships and research grants for a duration from 3 up to 12 months. A distinction is made between postgraduate training, postdoctoral research, advanced research and research collaboration. The program focuses on Brazil, China, India, Pakistan and various developing countries. For more information please visit www.twas.org

  • TWOWS offers postgraduate training fellowships for women in Sub-Saharan Africa or Least Developed Countries (LDC’s). Applications should reach the TWOWS secretariat by 31 May of each year. For more information please visit www.twows.org

  • TWNSO joint research grants. At least one of the two cooperating institutions must be located in a least developed country. For more information please visit www.twnso.org

  • Scidev regularly provides grants within the field of biotechnology, molecular genetics and biology. For more information please visit www.scidev.net/grants

  • Ford Foundation International Fellowships Program. One must be citizen of an IFP member country in order to apply. For more information please visit www.ifpsa.org

  • Open Society Institute and Soros Foundation Network offer grants, scholarships and fellowships. For more information please visit www.soros.org/grants

  • The CGIAR has launched a new competitive grants program designed to cultivate stronger relationships between civil society organizations and the CGIAR in agricultural research for development. North – South

  • Scholarships for Development: Still can’t find a scholarship in your preferred field of study? or a scholarship in the university/country you want to study in?   • VLIR-UOS offers over one hundred scholarships per year for international courses (ICP’s) and training programs (ITP’s). These courses are master programs, lasting one or two academic years, all of which lead to a master’s degree. They focus on specific problems of developing countries. The main target group for the courses are students from developing countries, although the courses can also be attended by students from other countries.   • University of Toronto’s Joint Centre for Bioethics organizes a graduate study in bioethics, which offers a master of health science in bioethics and a doctoral stream Collaborative Program in Bioethics.   • UNESCO in collaboration with L’Oreal offers 15 fellowships for young women in life sciences. Study fields include biotechnology, biology, biochemistry and agriculture. Special attention is given to candidatures from the LDC’s.

  • EMBO offers long-term fellowships for a period up to 2 years and for advanced postdoctoral research.  EMBO also offers a number of short-term fellowships for a period up to 3 months and aimed at collaborative research and intended for both EMBC members states and non-member states. For non-European applicants the fellowships are for a fixed duration of 90 days. Deadlines are ideally 3 months before a proposed start date.
