Prof. dr. Ellen Desmet

Ellen Desmet is assistant professor of asylum and migration law at the Faculty of Law and Criminology of Ghent University.
She is a member of the Human Rights Centre and of the Centre for the Social Study of Migration and Refugees (CESSMIR).
In her research she focuses on the interaction between migration law and human rights law from a users' perspective.
She teaches European and international asylum and migration law and policy as well as (Belgian) migration law, and co-lectures legal anthropology.
She also coordinates the migration law branch of the Human Rights and Migration Law Clinic, sits on the editorial board of the Tijdschrift voor Vreemdelingenrecht, and is a cofounder and board member of NANSEN – the Belgian Refugee Council.
Until September 2016, Ellen was a postdoctoral research fellow at the Human Rights Centre of Ghent University and at the Law and Development Research Group of the University of Antwerp.
She holds a PhD in Law from the KU Leuven (2010).
