Prof. dr. Gert Vermeulen

Director Institute for International Research on Criminal Policy (IRCP), Ghent University; Commissioner, Commission for the Protection of Privacy, Belgium 

Prof. Vermeulen is full professor of (European and international) criminal law at Ghent University, and director of the Institute for International Research on Criminal Policy (IRCP) (www.ircp.org).

He is also a Privacy Commissioner at the Belgian Privacy Commission since 2013. In the latter capacity, he is a member of several EU-level data protection bodies, such as the Article 29 Working Party subgroup on Borders, Travel and Law Enforcement (BTLE), the Supervision Coordination Group (SISII-Eurodac-VIS), the Customs Joint Supervisory Authority and the Europol Cooperation Board.

His scholarly and research expertise is in the areas of (European and international) criminal law and policy, in particular police and judicial cooperation in criminal matters in the EU, data protection, terrorism, trafficking in human beings, sexual exploitation of children, prostitution, organised crime, witness protection and human rights.

He has published widely (https://biblio.ugent.be/person/801000853051) in these and other areas and has acted as a (research) consultant or ad hoc expert for the Council of Europe, the European Commission, various EU Presidencies and the UN.
