(26-11-2024)
This groundbreaking volume edited by ANSER member Hannah Zagel (WZB Berlin Social Science Center) and with contributions of two other ANSER members Olena Ivanova (LMU) and Elizabeth Kemigisha (MUST) in November 2024, provides a comprehensive examination of how governments regulate human reproduction. Drawing on multidisciplinary perspectives, including sociology, political science, law, and demography, the volume offers in-depth cross-country and cross-policy comparisons.
The book’s 12 chapters delve into key areas of reproductive policy, such as sexuality education, contraception, abortion, and medically assisted reproduction. It explores the interconnectedness of ideologies, policy goals, and regulatory tools, shedding light on the tensions and conflicts that arise in shaping policies impacting reproductive welfare globally.
Beyond its comparative insights, the volume highlights critical issues of social inequality in reproduction, emphasizing the importance of inclusive reproductive welfare. The editors call for further academic work in this field to deepen understanding and inform policy development, fostering a more equitable approach to reproductive health and rights worldwide.
