Closing nutrient cycles on the local level / Aligning the use and production of manure with the environment

Date: 2017-2018
Funding source: VLM – Flemish Land Agency

Project summary

Flanders is a hotspot for animal production within Europe which comes with a range of serious environmental consequences, e.g. ammonia pollution. The Flemish government represented through the VLM has ambitious plans to address environmental pollution due to agricultural activities. In order to evaluate and design policies that facilitate the ambitions, the MODERNA research group developed integrated (biophysical-economic-logistic) models. The study provided with insights on how policies can be designed to fasten the transition to closed nutrient cycles and thereby addressing environmental problems.
