Kris Verheyen member of the Royal Flemish Academy

(21-12-2021) The Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts (KVAB) is a society of outstanding scientists, artists and business leaders. Prof. Kris Verheyen is now a member.

Of our faculty, Verheyen is the 9th scientist joining the Academy as a member, after Norbert De Kimpe, Godelieve Gheysen, Monica Höfte, Niceas Schamp, Guy Smagghe, Els Van Damme, Erick Vandamme and Willy Verstraete.

Verheyen studies the effects of global change on biodiversity and ecosystems, as well as the importance of biodiversity for the functioning of ecosystems. He translates this knowledge into guidelines for ecological recovery and for optimal delivery of ecosystem services. The geographical focus of his research is the temperate forests of Europe.

He is also involved as achairman of BOS+, member of the board of Natuurpunt Beheer, chairman of the steering committee of the Nature Report, founding member of the Forest Forum and honorary chairman and member of the Melle Environmental Council.

About the Academy

The members of the Academy frequently meet in the Palace of the Academies and discuss current developments in society from an interdisciplinary perspective. They are appointed for life and join one of four Classes: Natural Sciences, Humanities, Arts and Technical Sciences. New members are elected after nomination by three patrons within the Academy.
