Urban Biorefinery Program

(21-08-2020) Are you a Postdoc or PhD researcher with an expertise in biomass valorization and do you wish to turn science into an actual circular bioeconomy business case? And could you use some business skills and contacts in the entrepreneurial community?

..... Then the Urban Biorefinery program by RE-Source.Bio is the perfect accelerator to take your plans to the next level.

What is RE-Source.Bio?

RE-Source.Bio focuses on the biobased segments of the circular economy and aims to stimulate and strengthen research and services on resource recovery within the AUGent association. This community brings together more than 40 research groups from 5 UGent faculties and 3 associated University Colleges (HoGent, Howest and Artevelde Hogeschool).

How does it work?

The program offers seed money and support to start a 6-month business trajectory towards a tailor-made market analysis and business plan. You get to know partners and potential customers, and learn how to pitch your idea to investors and see it take the high road!

19 and 20th October, the program will start with a two-day hackathon for researchers and entrepreneurs. This is open for all experts in the field, including those who do not participate in the entire program. From November to January you will work on a thorough market research resulting in a first proof of concept/MVP, which will be pitched in front of a jury. The best team will receive an award. From February to April you will develop a mature business plan. The final presentation will be pitched in front of investors and a broad audience.

The city of Ghent is the central use-case during this program, hereby the focus lies on implementing an innovative local circular bio-economy. To do so, the program focuses on valorisation of three waste streams: (1) Used coffee grounds, (2) Orange peels and (3) bread waste. Your valorisation idea should be high up the cascade of value retention and have a high innovation potential. Any other suggestions on other biomass streams within a city context are always welcome!

Join the seminars!

Aiming to increase the internal cohesion between researchers active in the field of bioresource recovery, the community is proposing a Seminar Series covering the main topics of its working groups: nutrient recovery, water recovery, waste-to-energy, biochemicals, value chain assessment, and biomaterials/eco-design. In this series, participants will get to know the work developed within the community and also share their thoughts and questions on the different topics. By following these courses, PhD students can also accumulate ECTS points for coursework.

The first seminar, “Waste to Energy and More…”, will be held online on September 11th. To see the programme and join the event, please register at https://webappsx.ugent.be/eventManager/events/WTEAMWebinar .

If you are still not part of the RE-Source.Bio network and wishes to join our growing community and get updates on future seminars and opportunities, please register at https://forms.gle/kAoXC2Ke4FjDqZGi7
