Improved multifunctional land use leads to increased sustainability of urban food provision

Short food supply chains have been advocated as a means to reduce the environmental impact of the agro-food system.

However, to calculate the ecological performance of this system other flows (e.g. nutrients, water and urban waste) need to be considered as well.

While currently these aspects are often treated separately, this project integrates all elements.

Research is done in 7 European city-regions, and identifies innovative modes of (peri-)urban food provision, nutrient, water and waste management.

Our focus is on the multifunctional dimension of (peri-)urban land and investigates the variety and value of functions that agriculture performs in the city-regions. The findings are incorporated into a business model.

Improved multifunctional land use in cities leads to a higher sustainability of urban food provision and improved welfare of urban dwellers.
