Observing floods from space for operational water management

Floods can cause major damage to infrastructure or could even lead to casualties.

To mitigate flood events, operational water management continuously makes predictions of river discharges and flood models.

In order to optimize the model predictions, observations from satellites or airplanes of the flood event can be used.

Currently, the observed flood maps are used to better parameterize the flood models, however, these flood maps can also be used to improve model predictions through data assimilation.

The result of both methodologies allows for a better prediction of the spatiotemporal behaviour of a flood event. From such predictions, improved decisions with respect to flood risk management can be taken.
