ir. Alexandra Van Wesemael

I have always been fascinated by the discrepancy between the biological necessities of water, its calming nature and yet its absolute destructive power. Throughout my education at the faculty of Bioscience engineering, Ghent University, my interest in water sciences has only grown. Therefore, I chose to do a master thesis at the Laboratory of Hydrology and Water Management. My master thesis encompassed the use of different calibration algorithms to calibrate a hydrologic rainfall-runoff model for the Bellebeek catchment in Belgium. For that, I studied different MCMC algorithms with the DREAM algorithm as the main focus. Currently, I'm working at the Laboratory as a researcher on the subject of SAR imaging with respect to hydrologic as well as hydraulic studies. This encompasses the use of a data assimilation framework in order to study the impact of assimilating both remotely sensed and in situ measurements on flood inundation predictions

Research topics: hydraulic modelling, flood inundation, SAR imaging, data assimilation
