waeelalrobaish-jpgWaeel Salih Alrobaish is a 9-year experienced Academic Researcher on Food Science and Human Nutrition at the Saudi Arabian governmental research institute KACST (King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology). Sponsored by KACST through the Saudi Arabian Cultural Mission, Waeel is now undertaking a PhD on Applied Biological Sciences: Food Science and Nutrition at Ghent University.

His doctoral research, “Food fraud towards food integrity: A comparative analysis on food companies and organizations between Europe and Saudi Arabia”, will focus on food fraud vulnerability assessment, fraud detection and prevention on domestically produced and imported food products within the international food supply chain. The goal of this research is to identify the technical and non-technical drivers of food fraud, and ultimately determine strategies to prevent food fraud occurrences within national and international food companies.

This interdisciplinary research will draw from two areas: Food Safety Management, with the contribution of Prof. Liesbeth Jacxsens as research supervisor, and Organizational Psychology, with the contribution of Prof. Peter Vlerick as co-supervisor. This research shall contribute to foster food integrity within the international food supply chain, by suggesting improvements in the food legislations as well as in the food industry processes.

Waeel holds a Bachelor Degree on Food Science and Human Nutrition from Qassim University in Saudi Arabia, from which he graduated in 2009, a Master Degree on Food Science and Technology from the University of Queensland in Australia, from which he graduated in 2016, and has started his PhD studies at Gent University in March 2019.

Since 2009, Waeel works as Academic Researcher on Food Science and Human Nutrition at the Saudi Arabian governmental research institute KACST. His research areas space between sustainable food production and processing methodologies, agricultural technologies, lab analysis on food nutrients and human nutrition. As part of his Master studies sponsored by KACST, he completed a one-year research on “The effect of the processing texture on gluten-free breads”. By undertaking now a doctoral research on Applied Biological Sciences, he is expanding his area of expertise to food safety and food integrity through food fraud assessment.
