The vision of the SiTeMan group is to combine cutting-edge sensors and advanced data fusion and geostatistical modelling approaches with system control technology to opitimise farm input at field/sub-field scales for sustainable increase in yield.

SiTeMan aims at establishing a Precision Agriculture Centre in The Flemish part of Belgium within five years, utilizing 3.5 M EUR received from the Flemish Scientific Research Fund (FWO).

We use technology to help farmers manage within-field variability. This allows them to optimise inputs, resulting in increased yield and revenue and reduce environmental impact. Our team consists of skilled researchers with science and engineering backgrounds from all over the world who work together to bring Belgian agriculture into the digital era.

Research topics include:

  • Quantification of the yield limiting factors with proximal and remote sensing tools.
  • Numerical finite element and discrite element modelling of the interaction between soil and agricultural equipment (e.g. tillage, mechanical weeding, etc.).
  • Agricultural engineering soil mechanics related topics.
  • Optical (e.g. Near Infrared, Mid Infrared, and X-ray fluoresence, hyperspectral, thermal and fluorescence spectroscopy) methods and associated modelling tools for agricultural, environmental and food applications.
  • Mapping and risk assessment of contaminated land based on proximal soil sensing of hydrocarbons and heavy metals.

History

The Precision Soil and Crop Engineering Research Group (SiTeMan) of the Department of Environment was created in 2017 under leadership of Professor Abdul Mouazen, moving the Agricultural System Engineering Group from Cranfield University in the UK to Ghent University.
