About the public lecture

Whilst increasing attention is paid to the production of racist and gendered violence through European policies of migration control and border militarization, less research has focused on the ways in which varying forms of racist and gendered violence may also be produced within the so-called solidarity movements which have developed to “help” refugees at EU borders. Solidarity movements have provided a welcome counterpart to the violence of European migration and border regimes, but can also themselves be productive of racialized and gendered forms of violence anchored in colonialist and liberal notions of “saving” refugees. Based on research carried out at different French border sites, this paper examines the production of such forms of violence within solidarity movements and asks how it might be possible to move beyond these.
