The 2017 Dragon Boat Race in Antwerp

(19-09-2017) Saturday 16 September, Ghent University participated in the “2017 Hong Kong Dragon Boat Race” on the invitation of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, and sponsored by vzw De Steenschuit.

This was a unique happening as Ghent University participated for the first time in this Dragon Boat Race, which is organized on a yearly basis in the Port of Antwerp by the HKETO in close cooperation with several other partners:
The Dragon Boat race is a Chinese tradition that goes as far back as the 3rd century. It is very well-known for its energetic and colorful atmosphere, which is mainly created by the different teams of paddlers that race the long narrow boats, accompanied by the beat of the drum down to the finish line.
With a team of 1 Chinese drummer girl and 16 paddlers consisting of UGent-Chinese Studies alumni, students, researchers and colleagues from different departments, the team raced three times against three other teams in a beautiful Dragon Boat, and managed to  get the 20th place of 36!
We are convinced that we’ll go for it again next year.
In other words…….who joins in next year!
