For veterinarians interested in the knowledge and skills of the OPU ICSI procedure, a 2-day workshop will be organized on November 20 and 21st 2023 at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Ghent University.
Aim
For veterinarians interested in the knowledge and skills of the OPU ICSI procedure, a 2-day workshop will be organized on November 20 and 21st 2023 at the Clinic for Reproduction and Obstetrics of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Ghent University.
The workshop consists of presentations on the theoretical aspects but mainly emphasizes on the practical skills and tricks of the manipulations. The number of registrations will be limited to give everyone a chance to perform the manipulations themselves.
A 20% reduction will be granted to residents of the European College of Animal Reproduction.

Monday 20/11/2023
8u30 – 10u00: Presentation: OPU technique, clinical aspects
Recent literature and theory related to the OPU story along with practical and personal tips are discussed to get you started right away.
10u00 – 10u30: Coffee break
10u30 – 12u00: Demonstration: OPU in the mare
A brief demonstration of the material and variations used is demonstrated as well as the procedure itself.
12u00 - 13u30: Lunch
13u30- 17u00: Workshop: (small group rotation- hands on- ) OPU in the mare and oocyte manipulation
During this 4.5-hour session, everyone is encouraged to perform the OPU technique themselves on the mare as well as collecting their ‘own’ oocytes and prepare them for further processing.

Tuesday 21/11/2023
8u30 – 10u00: Presentation: In vitro production of horse embryos: from oocyte to embryo
The basic principles as well as the internal secrets from A to Z about oocyte collection, maturation, in vitro culture and ICSI, biopsy and genetic testing are explained. More first-line work such as preparing oocytes for transport or thawing frozen or vitrified embryos is also discussed.
10u00 – 10u30: Coffee break
10u30 – 12u00: Workshop: Handling of sperm and oocytes for ICSI
Everyone is encouraged to try the techniques discussed in the theoretical session for themselves in the lab.
12u00 - 13u30: Lunch
13u30 - 17u00: Workshop: ICSI, embryo cryopreservation, thawing and transfer (hands-on)
This last session mainly covers the freezing and thawing and transfer process in a hands on session.
